Washington D.C. -- J. A. Green & Company (“J. A. Green & Co.” or the “Company”) President Jeff Green published an opinion editorial (“op-ed”) in RealClearDefense titled, “Four Steps to Help the U.S. Decouple from China.”
The op-ed offers four actions the Biden administration and Congress should take as both branches consider strategies to secure U.S. supply chains for rare earth elements (“REEs”) that are present in almost all electronic devices. Mr. Green urges Congress and the White House to (1) purchase rare earths from domestic producers, (2) reduce regulatory burdens, (3) continue using Defense Production Act funds to invest in innovative domestic producers, and (4) view trusted foreign allies as part of the process to achieve true supply chain security. Mr. Green warns that “China maintains power over the REE market and the ability to disrupt foreign supply chains at the drop of a hat.” In turn, the steps he outlines “provide practical and affordable solutions to insulate domestic producers from market manipulation while fostering the innovation and redundancy needed to decouple from China.” Not only do “REE supply chains pose numerous challenges for U.S. national security,” Mr. Green says, but they “will only become more pronounced as complex technologies come to assist essentially all aspects of military operations.” J. A. Green & Co. has been helping businesses navigate the complexities of government since 2007. Jeff Green is a retired Air Force Colonel, former counsel for the House Armed Services Committee, and President of J. A. Green & Co., a Washington D.C. federal affairs consulting firm.
